For my typology assignment, I undertook
the study of types of workspaces, whether
the area's energy changes when occupied, and whether one can gain an
idea about the owner of a workspace based purely on the contents of
the space. Originally it was to be the study of types of
creative spaces, however
several subjects into the study I realised that, regrettably, a lot
more than simply creative work is done within these spaces. After my
fourth or fifth participant, I began to notice a pattern in them and
their relationship to their workspace: they would apologise to me
about the 'mess' and insist on cleaning up before I shot the images.
Are we so ashamed of the natural states of our workspaces, a space so
personal where a lot of our best work is done, that we need to alter
them for the eyes of others? Suffice to say, I subsequently
insisted they leave it as is, as a study cannot be performed
accurately if the data collected is contrived. These are the results.
